Making paper came as a necessity.
When I moved to Canada, I couldn't find the paper I was used to working with in Europe. So, somewhat stubbornly, I decided to figure out how to make it myself. What started as a practical solution became an obsession with paper itself, its texture, imperfections, weight, and the way it can completely change a design.
That was the beginning of Papier June.
Who I am
I'm Axelle, a French-born graphic designer with more than 20 years in design.
I've always been more interested in the idea behind something than simply making it look beautiful. I'm obsessed with finding the concept that makes a project click, and then figuring out how paper, typography, colour and form can bring that idea to life.
I don't believe a wedding invitation needs to look like a wedding invitation.
I'd rather understand what you're drawn to outside of weddings. An artwork, a place, an object, a colour combination you can't stop thinking about. Those references tell me much more than a board filled with other people's invitations.
Every commission develops its own visual language, shaped by who you are, your world, and what feels true to you.
You don't need to know exactly what you want before we begin. Curiosity is enough. We'll figure out the rest together.
How I work
Ideas usually don't arrive while I'm sitting at my desk trying to find them. They show up while I'm walking, looking at something completely unrelated, or making paper in the studio.
That's part of why I take on so few commissions. I like having the space to think, experiment and let an idea become what it needs to be.
I take on eight bespoke commissions each year.
I tend to live with a project for a while.
